30p. 21cm.; Handwritten in printed ledger, with a broadside "List of Lands of the Union Pacific Railway in Kansas still for sale on May 15, 1884, in Lincoln County," together with a handwritten "List of Applications, L L Co.," and accompanying letter, dated May 14, 1885 tipped into back endpaper and board. The first page in the book, unnumbered has been tipped in.

In 1877 Tufts moved from New Hampshire to Atchison, Kansas, where he was employed as an assistant engineer by the Union Pacific Railroad. Although trained as a civil engineer at the New London (New Hampshire) Institute, by 1879, Tufts began to dabble in mortgage and real estate deals while still an employee of the Union Pacific Railroad. Gardiner Andrus Armstrong Deane was born 23 June 1840 in Norfolk County, Mass. He served in the Civil War, rising to the rank of lieutenant-colonel and inspector-general of the department stationed at Little Rock. At the conclusion of the war, he went into the mercantile business until 1867 when he became chief clerk of the land department of the Union Pacific Railroad (Central Branch).
